I have been using software for a long time and over the years and tried various free software suites and found them unsatisfactory. Often I have muttered that you get what you pay for.

Our office has close to 100 desktop PC installations and since installing desktop computers we have been a Microsoft shop.  Our desktop applications have always been Microsoft products. We also take licensing seriously and have been careful to keep our Microsoft application licenses up to date.  This costs a staggering sum of money.

In an effort to reduce costs we have again investigated Open Office. Wow!  This product has matured and competes favourably with Microsoft as to functionality and is free. From the OpenOffice web site:

OpenOffice is the leading open-source office software suite for word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, graphics, databases and more. It is available in many languages and works on all common computers. It stores all your data in an international open standard format and can also read and write files from other common office software packages. It can be downloaded and used completely free of charge for any purpose

We have now moved to Open Office, saved a lot of money and are completely satisfied that we made a good decision.
