The terrible devastation in Fort Mac will be a true test for the insurance industry. With predictions of over $9B in insured losses we will now see if a complicated system of insurance, reinsurance and regulatory oversight is sufficient to allow insurance companies to survive and fulfill their obligation to policy holders.

As I understand the system I am confident that most insurance companies will survive and obligations will be met. I also expect there will be some who will be pushed to the edge.

There will be long term implications for insurance buyers as this unfolds in the future. At the very least, insurers capacity to underwrite insurance is likely to be curtailed. I expect some insurers will stand above others in their approach to look after their customers. I expect Canadian insurer Intact will be one of those. I hope I am correct.
