Muhammad Ali is dead. From his lips:
And afterwards he said about going to prison and refusing to go to war: “I ain’t got no quarrel with those Viet Cong,” after refusing to the join the war in Vietnam in 1967. “No Viet Cong ever called me nigger.”
Later he said: “I’ve done something new for this fight. I done wrestled with an alligator, I done tussled with a whale; handcuffed lightning, thrown thunder in jail; only last week, I murdered a rock, injured a stone, hospitalized a brick; I’m so mean I make medicine sick.”
I either watched or listened to all of his professional bouts. Despite not being a fan of boxing I was, like many at the time, a fan of this gifted athlete and intrigued by his political and social conscious. It was an unsettled time in America and I suspect that one had to be in America at the time to understand this man’s influence.
