I have been called all of above and no doubt, with some justifications. With that in mind I question how we can learn from the past if we attempt to remove all symbols of the past-which do not accommodate political correctness at this time in history.

Current events direct our eyes toward incidents in the world where statues are being removed, attempts are being made to remove names from history and seemingly generally erase record of individuals/situations which by today’s standards that are reprehensible.

A wise man once said to me that to understand the future we must understand the past. I can’t help but wonder if, rather than erase, we educate. If we left the symbols in place but took the opportunity to educate would this not be more effective in preventing the same behaviour in the future?

How can we avoid mistakes that were made in the past if they are erased from history?
